LED Lighting has come a long way over the past 10 years. Specifically, the Gavita 1700e LED
Offering a staggering 2.6 µmol s-1 per watt totalling 1700 µmol s-1 on the 645 watt unit. Full spectrum commercial LED lighting will offer intense lighting for your plants with a 50% reduction in electricity cost over traditional 1,000 watt equivalent high pressure sodium lighting and 40% reduced BTU.
In all of our light testing Gavita makes our favourite LED by far. Its power is more then comparable to a 1,000 watt double ended high pressure sodium in yield, quality and flower density except its power and heat are reduced majorly. The fact that the lights cost more out of the gates quickly makes up for it on the HVAC costs in what you save for installing a new facility not to mention the energy savings down the road.
They can be linked together with the EL1 or EL2 Gavita master controllers to control up to 1,000 lights at a time. Dimming down to 50% when needed, and trust us, you will need to dim these beasts!
In our experience you will want to keep them as far from the canopy as possible (2' minimum), as they are very powerful and not like most other LED lights as far as the distance from the canopy goes. Mainly at a young age, the plants will want these at 50% and 4' ideally and as the plant gets healthier and bigger the distance can get closer and intensity can raise.
When using the master controller take advantage of the automatic high heat function that will sense the set temperature through a probe that you hang at canopy height and automatically dim or shut down the lights as needed to reach your desired set temperature range.
There is also a sunrise and sunset function that is very useful for mimicking the natural raising and lowering of the sunlight's intensity indoors. It does this by raising the intensity of the grow light when the first turn on between a desired (sunset) set time and lowering the same way at sunset. This will shave off a week or more off your harvest time in the end with the reduced stress from immediate light changes.
The lights are 44" x 44.5", covering a very large footprint. They are good to cover a 5' x 5' area, however in some cases our clients want to cover the ceilings with them like seen below.
